Where the money goes

Every resin quote splits three ways: groundworks, the resin system, and the details. On a full dig-out, excavation, cart-away and the porous sub-base swallow around 40 to 50% of the total, the half of the job nobody ever sees again. The resin bound wearing course, aggregate, two-part binder, mixing and trowelling, typically takes 35 to 45%. Edging, drainage, steps and recessed covers account for the rest. That split is why overlays price so much lower: the expensive half already exists under your feet.

How to weigh up a quote fairly

Judge the written specification, not the headline: resin system named and UV-stable stated, base build-up in millimetres, aggregate blend identified, edging itemised, drainage shown, waste removal included, guarantee length in years and VAT clear. A quote missing those lines is not cheaper, it is just less specific. One seasonal note for 2026: resin will not cure below about 5°C, so Middlesbrough diaries fill fastest from April to September; shoulder-season quotes are often keener and the local ground stays workable well into autumn.
